Forest Hills traces its origins to 1845, when surveyor and early Dallas County pioneer Warren Angus Ferris established a 640-acre homestead near White Rock Creek. Much of that land eventually became the Forest Hills neighborhood, formally platted in 1924 as a wooded residential retreat approximately six miles beyond the Dallas city limits. Early advertisements invited buyers to build “a home in a forest” among mature oak, elm and pecan trees near White Rock Lake. Annexed into Dallas in 1945, Forest Hills has retained the spacious lots, mature canopy and relaxed character that first distinguished it a century ago. Its homes reflect an unusually broad range of architectural traditions, from Tudor and Colonial Revival to ranch, mid-century modern and contemporary design. Today, the neighborhood remains a quiet East Dallas enclave at the southern end of White Rock Lake, just across from the Dallas Arboretum.
