There are dog-friendly towns, and then there is Golden, Colorado, on the day thousands of Golden Retrievers arrive at once. Every February, the historic downtown becomes a moving landscape of honey-colored coats, wagging tails, winter sweaters and humans who have happily surrendered the spotlight.
The annual Goldens in Golden gathering began in 2019 as a playful way to celebrate International Golden Retriever Day and bring visitors downtown during a quieter winter month. What started as a clever local idea has grown into one of the largest Golden Retriever gatherings in the world.
The town name made the joke inevitable
Golden sits along Clear Creek at the edge of the Rocky Mountain foothills, with a walkable downtown and a famous “Welcome to Golden” arch spanning Washington Avenue. Put a few thousand Golden Retrievers beneath that sign and the group photograph practically writes its own caption.
The event is more than one enormous portrait. Washington Avenue closes to traffic, vendor villages fill with dog gear and treats, nonprofits meet new supporters, and local patios, shops and trails spend the weekend entertaining four-legged visitors. Friendly, leashed and well-socialized dogs of other breeds are welcome too. Golden may be the star, but nobody is checking canine identification.
A Golden Mayor is now involved
The 2026 gathering added an inaugural class of canine honors. Cash became Golden Mayor, Rylie was named Hometown Hero, Goose earned Rookie of the Year, and the wonderfully named Estes Bark received the Hertz Gold Standard. It is impossible to take these titles too seriously, which is precisely why they work.
Earlier gatherings also connected the fun with animal welfare. Merchandise proceeds supported organizations including Golden Retriever Rescue of the Rockies and Foothills Animal Shelter, showing how an unabashedly adorable tourism idea can also direct attention toward dogs still waiting for homes.
The next takeover is already scheduled
The next Goldens in Golden is scheduled for Saturday, February 6, 2027, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in downtown Golden. Admission is free. Organizers plan three group portrait sessions, two vendor villages, games, contests, nonprofit groups and dog-friendly shuttles from off-site parking.
The celebration takes place in a Colorado winter, rain, snow or shine. Visitors are advised to dress in layers, bring water and keep dogs leashed. The official rideshare point is near the Clear Creek Parking Lot at 907 Archer Street.
Dallas may want to take notes
Dallas already understands the power of dog culture. White Rock Lake, the Katy Trail, neighborhood patios and local rescue events routinely bring strangers into conversation through their pets. Goldens in Golden offers a cheerful lesson in how a city can build a genuine tradition around dogs, small businesses and a sense of place without making the occasion feel manufactured.
And if an entire Colorado town can hand over its main street to thousands of retrievers for a morning, surely Dallas has room for one more excellent dog party.
