A Year Without Dingo, and a Love That Still Feels Close

One year after losing my sweet boy, I’m thinking about the quiet ways a dog becomes part of the shape of a life.

This week marks a year since I lost Dingo. I still find it difficult to put that kind of absence into a sentence. The word “pet” can sound so small beside the place a dog holds in a home, in a daily routine, and in the heart of the person who loves him.

A dog is there for the ordinary hours. The walks, the familiar greetings, the small pauses in a busy day. Their companionship is woven through so much of life that, when they are gone, it is not only the dog we miss. We miss the rhythm of being together.

That is one reason grief for a beloved dog can feel so immediate. The bond is made of thousands of everyday moments, offered without ceremony and without conditions. Their presence asks us to slow down, pay attention, and care for another life. The love can be simple, but it is never slight.

I think of Dingo with gratitude for the time we had and tenderness for the space he left behind. A year has passed, but love does not follow a calendar. Some days bring memories gently. Others catch you by surprise. Both are part of missing someone who mattered.

This photograph holds a glimpse of Dingo outdoors, bright-eyed and happy in the grass. I’m sharing it to remember him as more than the loss: as my sweet boy, deeply loved, and still part of my story.

If you are missing a dog of your own, you do not need to explain why it hurts. The bond was real. The companionship mattered. And the love remains, even as life slowly learns a new shape around the absence.

For Dingo, with love.

Inspired by Tommy Tomlinson’s reflection on the depth of human-dog bonds in “Why a Dog’s Death Hits So Hard,” adapted from his book Dogland.
