CityVet Oak Lawn Cared for Giorgio. And for Me.

This week’s local business spotlight is personal. After a frightening few days with Giorgio, I have a very heartfelt thank-you for the people at CityVet Oak Lawn.

This past week, Giorgio got pneumonia. And I was a mess.

Not a composed, quietly concerned dog dad. A crying, slobbering mess who needed someone to help his baby.

I rushed him to CityVet Oak Lawn at 2727 Oak Lawn Avenue, the clinic I have used for several years since moving to this part of the neighborhood. They got him in right away. An examination and X-rays established that he had pneumonia, and for the next two days, their team cared for him through a very scary stretch.

When Giorgio would not eat, I knew

Anyone who knows Giorgio knows that a lack of appetite is not normally among his problems. Left to his own questionable judgment, he considers a stick of butter and a raw pork chop a perfectly reasonable meal if nobody is looking. That is a description of his ambitions, not his approved diet.

So when he would not eat anything, I knew my boy was sick.

Oddly enough, my mother used to say that was how she knew I was sick, too. Apparently, some family traits cross species.

They did more than take care of him

There is a difference between taking care of an animal and making you feel that the animal is genuinely cared about. This week, I felt the latter.

The team monitored Giorgio, gave him IV support and antibiotics, worked to bring down his fever, and tried to coax him into eating. They paid attention to the dog in front of them, not simply the diagnosis.

And while they were caring for him, they were kind to me. When you are frightened for an animal you love, that kindness matters more than you can neatly explain afterward. I did not need to pretend I was handling everything beautifully. They understood.

I want to thank Dr. Aderholt, Dr. McLaughlin, and the entire team. The people at the front desk and the staff working alongside the doctors deserve that gratitude, too. In my years going there, the office staff has consistently been excellent. This week gave me an especially powerful reason to say so publicly.

A neighborhood practice worth knowing

CityVet Oak Lawn offers routine veterinary care as well as urgent care. The clinic’s official location page lists Dr. Bridget McLaughlin as an associate veterinarian whose professional interests include surgery, preventive medicine, and reducing the stress pets can feel during a visit. Her biography also emphasizes communication with the people who love those pets.

Those are useful things to know about a practice. But this is not intended as a catalog of credentials or services. It is one neighbor raising his hand to say: these people were there when we needed them, and I am deeply grateful.

There is convenient parking behind the clinic, too. It is a small practical detail on an ordinary day, and a very welcome one when you are arriving with a sick dog and your mind is somewhere else entirely.

Home, together, and eating again

As I write this, Giorgio is back home and eating again. After the week we have had, that ordinary little act feels like something worth celebrating.

We talk a lot at The Dallas Registry about the places that make a neighborhood feel like home. Sometimes that is a restaurant, a shop, or a familiar place to walk. Sometimes it is the veterinary clinic where people help you through a day you wish you were not having.

To everyone at CityVet Oak Lawn: thank you for caring for my baby, for being kind to his very emotional dad, and for helping us get back to the simple pleasure of being home together.

Recognition across the CityVet family

CityVet displays these reader-choice and regional award badges on its company website. They reflect recognition across different CityVet locations and markets.

A $25 welcome for new clients, and a referral credit for me

If you are considering your first CityVet appointment, its Care to Share referral program offers a $25 credit toward a new client’s first appointment at a participating location. Present the downloadable referral coupon at that appointment and tell the team that Kevin Day, a client at CityVet Oak Lawn, referred you.

The first-appointment invoice must total at least $25. After that visit, CityVet also adds a $25 credit to the referring client’s account for a future visit. The credit is valid only at CityVet, cannot be exchanged for cash, and cannot be replaced if lost or stolen. The program page says there is no limit on referrals. Confirm participation and any questions with the clinic before your visit.

A note of transparency: If you use this offer and name me as your referrer, I receive that $25 CityVet account credit, too. My recommendation comes from the care Giorgio and I experienced; I want you to know about the referral benefit as well.
