Your dog has spent the year supervising deliveries, judging your dates, and barking at a perfectly innocent leaf. At last, an occasion worthy of that dramatic range.

Dallas Pets Alive is holding its Howl-O-Ween celebration on Saturday, October 31, from noon to 5 p.m. at its Adoption Container at Community Beer Co., 3110 Commonwealth Drive, Dallas. There will be costumes, adoptable pets, and enough canine main-character energy to justify clearing your camera roll. The rescue’s event listing has the details.

Small dog. Enormous ambition.

The costume contest begins at 3 p.m., with registration open from noon until 2:45 p.m. A $10 donation enters a dog in the competition. Categories include big dogs, small dogs, groups, and overall winners.

We are not saying your dachshund needs to arrive as a lobster. We are saying the silhouette is already doing half the work.

A little ridiculous. A good cause.

The planned festivities include trick-or-treating for dogs and children, a Kong-based bobbing-for-bones activity, pet vendors, prizes, and adoptable animals. A spooky photo opportunity is listed at a $5 donation. Community Beer Co. also confirms the Halloween schedule.

Come for the tiny cape. Stay for the possibility that someone else’s next best friend is waiting to meet them. You do not need a dog of your own to appreciate the sight of one dressed for a promotion.

Our house rule for the dress-up portion: the joke should be on the humans, not at the dog’s expense. If your companion would rather attend in a collar and a strong sense of self, that is a complete look.
